Bader Philanthropies is a Milwaukee based private family foundation established in 1992 to honor the legacy of its founders, Helen, Alfred, and Isabel. The foundation invests in a wide range of areas including youth development, neighborhood engagement, healthy aging, urban education, the arts, and addiction recovery. Over the years, Bader Philanthropies has committed more than $500 million in grants and program related investments to strengthen communities and convene partners.
For Bridgett, one of the values behind that work is supporting organizations that are trusted, consistent, and rooted in dignity.
“La Causa is a pillar organization in our community that we are fortunate to have,” Bridgett shared. “The organization is rooted in providing children, youth and families with comprehensive services that provide stability and the nurturing that our families need to become their best selves.”
Her connection to La Causa began long before she worked in philanthropy. “I first learned about La Causa when I was a kid,” Bridgett said. Growing up on Milwaukee’s south side, she lived just a few blocks away from La Causa when it was located on 1024 W. Greenfield Avenue. “My best friend’s mother worked there as a daycare teacher, and we would often go visit her after school.”
That early experience stayed with her, and it shapes why Bader remains committed today. One of Bader Philanthropies’ funding focus areas is Youth Development, and since the foundation was established in 1992, Bader has supported La Causa through both grants and a program related investment centered around youth development. More recently, Bridgett shared that Bader has funded the after school academic program at La Causa Charter School, classroom technology, and the Crisis Nursery & Respite Center.
Bridgett emphasized that La Causa’s strength is how it supports families in practical ways across multiple stages of life. And for her, the Crisis Nursery & Respite Center is one of the most essential parts of that safety net.
“The Crisis Nursery & Respite Center located in the Walker’s Point area is an emergency shelter for children with the goal to prevent child abuse and neglect when parents may be experiencing crisis situations like homelessness, domestic violence, or a medical emergency,” Bridgett explained.
“This is an invaluable resource that we have in our community,” she added, “and we are so grateful that La Causa has kept this service accessible for more than 30 years.”
When Bridgett talks about La Causa, she also talks about the people who make the work possible year after year. She shared a moment that felt both surprising and deeply meaningful. “Fun fact,” she said. “When I visited La Causa’s Charter School guess who I ran into…my best friend’s mother!”
Some 30 plus years later, her best friend’s mother was still working at La Causa. “It was amazing to see her again after all these years,” Bridgett shared. “There is something telling about an organization where you see many long time employees who have invested their time and talents with an organization and the people they serve throughout our community.”
For anyone considering supporting La Causa, Bridgett’s message is simple: see it for yourself.
“Go and see the amazing work that they do in person,” she said. “See for yourselves the intentionality that the La Causa family pours into the lives of the children and families through early education, the Crisis Nursery & Respite Center, and other supportive services. You will be glad that you did.”
We’re grateful for Bridgett and for partners like Bader Philanthropies who invest in prevention, stability, and opportunity and help ensure Milwaukee families can access support when they need it most.
